It is not enough to “just” breed. We also want to organize occasional joint activities with the buyers of our Kerrys and with all other Kerry owners. To this end, we are planning various events in consultation with interested parties.
It is not enough to “just” breed. We also want to organize occasional joint activities with the buyers of our Kerrys and with all other Kerry owners. To this end, we are planning various events in consultation with interested parties.
My wife and I had the idea of holding a grooming seminar for interested puppy owners of our litters for a long time. This idea was then planned out in the summer of 2022 and the owners of 7 Kerrys took part in this seminar on January 28th, 2023. The eighth participant had to cancel due to illness. We took over all the planning and carried out the care day in our double garage. Families from Brandenburg, Saxony, Bavaria, Baden-Württemberg and Hesse traveled to the event. We also had overnight guests due to the long journey. The seminar was led by Doris Kapferer from Kreuzlingen, Switzerland. Doris is not only a very experienced groomer, she owns her own grooming business with several employees, she successfully trains dog hairdressers and groomers of the future, she has also been a member of the QV Dog Hairdressers Commission of the Swiss Association for Education in Animal Care SVBT since 2009. Since 2017 she has been working as an international judge for the European Grooming Association EGA. In addition to many podium places at home and abroad, she won 5 times Swiss Dog Hairdressing Champion, Best in Show in Erfurt 2016 Kerry Blue Terrier, Best Makeover Sunday Groomania Belgium Standard Poodle, Best in Show Bromberg Poland 2019 Standard Poodle. Since 2012, Doris has been successfully breeding Kerry Blue Terriers, large and miniature poodles and has been very successful in showing her dogs at exhibitions. The content of the seminar was “Caring for the Kerry Blue Terrier” (coat structures, proper washing and blow-drying, nail trimming, ear care, tartar removal, etc.). The necessary “work tools and their correct use” (shampoos, conditioners, cutting scissors, styling scissors, modeling scissors, clippers, brushes, combs, hairdryers, etc.) and of course the correct cutting/trimming of the Kerry with a utility cut for everyday life and the perfect cut for the exhibition. Doris was able to convey her knowledge to the participants' different abilities and everyone was fully engaged. A hearty lunch including coffee and cake made the day a complete success. At the end, many photos were taken. There was a large gift basket for Doris and a certificate of participation plus a fancy rosette for the participants. We sat together on two evenings and talked about the Kerrys and got to know each other better. There was a lot of laughter and everyone agreed that it wasn't the last time we would do such a great event together for the benefit of this wonderful breed.
On 06.09.24, helpers met to carry out the preparations for the Kerry event. Tents had to be erected, rings marked out and beer tent sets set up. The agility hall and the large sand arena were also prepared. Drinks, coffee, cakes and salads were chilled in the bistro for the evening party. Afterwards, we spent a few hours together in the beautiful weather and then spent a quiet night in the camper or rented rooms. At 9 o'clock in the morning, the registered participants were greeted in still somewhat foggy weather. It turned out to be a wonderful summer's day with lots of activities and interesting conversations. Visitors came by and even the former and long-time breeders Mr. Spillmann and Mrs. Erhart did not want to miss this unique event with 30 Kerry Blue Terriers. The demonstrators for agility, rally obedience, tracking and obedience put their heart and soul into the event. Many questions were asked and anyone who wanted to could try out the various sports with their Kerry under expert guidance. Meanwhile, the renowned biologist, FCI judge and Kerry breeder Justina Juskeviciute from Lithuania was busy grooming a show-quality Kerry. She did not miss the opportunity to groom several Kerry's during the whole day (except during the ring judging) under the eyes of the enthusiastic owners, even in the dark with “emergency lighting”. The later ring judging of the domestic dogs, the youngest dogs and the show dogs completely exceeded the time frame. All those present, who had already gained experience with their dogs at shows, were completely impressed by the intensity of the judging. There was not enough space on the score sheets to cover everything Justina examined in the Kerrys. The evaluations spoken by Justina in English were immediately translated into German by the ring helpers and so all the spectators were able to experience live what the breed standard of the Kerry's looks like. There were fancy ribbons for all participants, food samples from Belcando and trophies for the winners. As organizers, we had our hands full to ensure that the event ran smoothly. The helpers at the information stand and in the bistro also made sure that at the evening party the summary of all participants was only positive and another event of this kind was already being discussed. Ruta Hauke and Renate Mayr took unforgettable pictures of this meeting.
Many thanks to all helpers, all participants and the team from the Hof Tannenberg dog sports center in Bad Orb for a very successful event. We would especially like to thank the families from Finland, Holland and Switzerland who came from so far away. A big thank you also goes to the Bewital company, who generously supported the event with ring binders, placement signs, route tape and lots of 1 kg food samples. Mrs Erhart (Kennel Zur Saliergruft) and the Krüger family, who have been keeping Kerry's for 40 years and played a large part in the organization, were of the opinion that there has never been such a large Kerry Blue Terrier event in Germany with so many different activities. It will not be the last.
For the future, we would like to see more participation from German and foreign breeders and Kerry owners. Such an event could then take on an international character.
"Breed Presentation Kerry-Blue-Terrier"
On September 7, 2024, the time has come: After almost a year of planning, we will be organizing a breed presentation that, to our knowledge, has never before been held in the German Kerry Blue Terrier breed in this scope and content.
In order to present this elegant and charming breed of dog with its many and varied talents in an appropriate way, and not just in terms of its appearance, we have been able to persuade owners of Kerry Blue Terriers to present their dogs to us outside of everyday life during their various activities. There will be challenging demonstrations in tracking, agility, rally obedience, basic training and obedience. There will also be hands-on activities.
For our event, we have been able to secure the centrally located and ultra-modern dog sports center Rhein-Main, Hof Tannenberg in Bad Orb (https://www.hsz-rm.de/de/). It has a dog sports hall with artificial turf pitches, outdoor sand pitches, various grass areas, new sanitary facilities and a cozy bistro. In addition to guest rooms, the operator offers plenty of space for motorhomes (including electricity), tents and free parking directly at the site.
So far, well over 40 Kerry Blue Terriers have been registered by their owners. In addition to our kennel, dogs from other German and foreign kennels will be represented, including: Dinnyèsvàrosi (HU), Celtic Blue Vom Klosterberg (D), Blue Hill Kerry's (D), Rollick's (S), Easdales (D), vom Kranichtanz (D), Geijes (FI), Esprit Active (CH), Dutch Brand's (NL) and Mc Duffy`s (S), and we will also be welcoming participants from Finland, Lithuania, Switzerland and the Netherlands.
At an information stand, visitors will not only receive breed information, theoretical advice on care, nutrition and the typical appearance of our breed, but Kerry's will also be "brought into shape" live.
During the day, several dogs will be presented to an experienced judge from Lithuania for evaluation, informing the audience about details of the breed standard.
In addition, we offer a professional photo shoot during our event, where you can present yourself with your favorite (also solo).
In addition to all of this, we will not forget the physical well-being at our festival. For a small fee, we offer our visitors coffee, cake, sausage with rolls and non-alcoholic drinks. Any surplus profits will be donated to the local animal welfare association.
Does this appeal to you? Take the plunge and visit our event, even if you don't (yet) have a Kerry Blue Terrier, we promise you will gain experience and knowledge. Admission is free for spectators!
